Medical Research Center Launches Summer Training on PCR, DNA Fingerprinting &

Genetic Analyzers for Veterinary Students

The Medical Research Center at Hawler Medical University is proud to host a hands-on summer training program for third-year students from the College of Veterinary Medicine, Salahuddin University.

Guided by AssistProf. Ashti Mohammed Amin Saeed, the program runs three days a week over the span of one month and focuses on advanced laboratory techniques essential for modern veterinary science and biomedical research. The core modules include:

  • Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR): Students learn the principles and workflows of PCR, a fundamental method for amplifying specific DNA sequences in laboratory settings.

  • DNA Fingerprinting: The training covers genetic profiling techniques—such as STR and VNTR analysis—used in fields ranging from disease research to forensic applications.

  • Genetic Analyzer Operations: Instruction on operating capillary electrophoresis-based instruments (e.g., Applied Biosystems 3500), crucial for fragment analysis and genotyping.

The initiative is designed to develop students’ technical competence in equipment handling, data interpretation, and laboratory protocols—strengthening their preparedness for future scientific endeavors. This collaboration between Hawler Medical University and Salahuddin University reflects our ongoing commitment to academic partnership and research excellence.

We anticipate that participants will emerge with practical skills and valuable exposure to cutting-edge genetic methodologies, further enhancing their academic and professional potential.
