On May 12, 2026 – Following the directives of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the Career Development Center (CDC) at Hawler Medical University
(HMU) held an extensive meeting today, Tuesday, May 12, 2026. The meeting aimed to establish mechanisms for integrating two new essential subjects—Career Development Skills and Entrepreneurship—into the curricula across all university colleges to enhance the competitiveness of graduates in the labor market.
At the onset of the meeting, the CDC management expressed deep appreciation for the continuous support of the University President and the Vice President for Student Affairs. Their progressive vision remains instrumental in advancing the university’s mission, particularly in securing a bright future for graduates by fostering skill development and creating successful pathways into the professional world.
The Strategic Importance for Medical Students
The meeting included a detailed review of the course books, highlighting the necessity of these skills for students in the medical and healthcare sectors:
- Career Development Skills: Focusing on labor market readiness through professional CV writing and interview techniques. It also emphasizes professional networking with medical centers and healthcare agencies, alongside "Soft Skills" such as teamwork and scientific, modern patient interaction.
- Entrepreneurship: Aiming to inspire graduates to look beyond public sector employment. The curriculum encourages the creation of private ventures, such as modern clinics, advanced laboratories, and innovative "Health-Tech" projects, while providing a foundation in financial and administrative management within health institutions.
Implementation Mechanisms
The committee outlined several key steps for a successful rollout:
- Curriculum Adaptation: Tailoring content to fit medical specialties, including pharmacy, dental centers, aesthetic medicine, and laboratory sciences.
- Strategic Timing: It was proposed that these subjects be taught during the first and second semesters of the final academic years to ensure students are immediately prepared for the transition to the workforce.
- Expert Instruction: Leveraging both local and international experts to provide practical, hands-on training. The meeting also emphasized the importance of involving faculty members within each college who possess a passion for skill development.
Decisions and Recommendations
The session concluded with several high-level recommendations:
- Specialized Committee: Proposing a small committee of college coordinators, under the supervision of College Deans, to refine the syllabi to align with the unique healthcare environment.
- Faculty Training: Organizing specialized training workshops for the instructors assigned to these courses, led by certified and experienced trainers.
- Ongoing Coordination: Maintaining active communication with the Ministry of Higher Education for the latest instructional guidelines and resources.
- Student Awareness: Launching introductory seminars across all colleges to educate students on the professional value of these new subjects.
This initiative marks a significant step in strengthening Hawler Medical University’s national and international standing. By equipping graduates with both professional expertise and an entrepreneurial mindset, HMU continues to provide a vital service to the healthcare sector of the Kurdistan Region.
